What exactly is a “Great White Noise”?

I’m sure it is different things to different people, but to save the exercise of arguing like disgruntled politicians or spoiled children in the sandbox, I will tell you what it means to me.

To our neighbors to the south, Great White Noise might be the disquieting sounds of musical discontent that rumbles across a vast “wilderness”. The proverbial “howling wind” of the Great White North. This is, at least in part, an accurate assessment. The howling winds would be those of a quiet rebellion. A rebellion not of the violent, or even physical kind, but a rebellion nonetheless. This rebellion will not be fought in the halls of any countries government (for governments have long ago forgotten the cultural and musical needs of whatever peoples they were elected to serve), but instead this is a rebellion that will be waged in the small clubs, the all-age venues, the sound studios, and the independent and college radio stations across this great country. This is a fight that will wage guitar against corporate power, a single note against the drone of the multitude, a caring voice against the apathy of the masses, and ultimately by every Canadian music lover against the overwhelming wave of drivel spewed forth by our once proud music industry which is now reduced to the dignified status of the simple cousin visiting for the weekend.

Great White Noise, like so many that have sprung to life on the internet in this country, strives to make Canadian independent music heard, and in doing so attempts to bring a somewhat respectable level of public awareness and recognition to the artists in Canada that continue to buck the system and create music on their own term, in their own way.

Over the past 3 years of Great White Noise existence I have had the (usually) pleasant honor of dealing with literally hundreds of bands from coast to coast. I have watched as many of these bands matured and evolved, found their true sounds, struggled to find places to play, scrimped and saved to raise enough money for that first demo, and finally when all was said and done, to collapse under the financial and social burdens and split up.

As a nation, Canada has become a disgrace to those musicians eking out a meager living within it’s borders. As a nation we have happily decided that we will listen to whatever is force-fed us from below the 69th. It is true that there are “hit” Canadians, but to become this they have had to become inseparable clones to their American counterparts. Sound a likes and look a likes on the most contemptuous levels. Simply another source of often incoherent and anonymous drivel that sits well between the current hit of today and that of last week.

Within the pages of Great White Noise you will find reviews of Canadian independent artists CD’s, features of some of the artists, their CD’s for sale, spotlights on independent record labels and music industry manufacturers. You will also find a page called Indie Trip Radio. This is a GWN exclusive! A one hour radio program by this name will be manufactured and distributed for free to any campus radio station willing to play it. The program will feature all Canadian independent music as well as some information on the bands. It is hoped that eventually this show will be carried on stations from coast to coast. In conjunction with Indie Trip Radio GWN will be offering many songs to be purchased. This will not be done by download, but by purchasing a burnt cd-r of 12 songs from those available. We feel there are several benefits to doing it this way, although there is also more work and expense involved! The proceeds from Indie Trip Radio are split between the bands that have a song purchases and GWN. Our portion will be used to both keep the site and radio program up and running.

In short, like many of the bands, GWN is working only to maintain itself. Profit in the independent music world is an unheard of thing (like virginity in Hollywood). I implore you to support Canadian independent music. It doesn’t have to be here at GWN. There are a number of great Canadian music sites. Do a search and check them out. Go to the artist’s sites and drop them a note. A few simple words can mean a great deal to them. Take a second to think before you plunk down the money for the next CD you buy. Wouldn’t it be better to support a Canadian artist? Take a few minutes of your time and you will easily find some great Canadian independent artist that is far far better than whatever it was you were about to buy. The music is there, the quality is there, please take the time to find it!

Alas, it may prove one day that Great White Noise, much like many great sites before it, and many great bands, will say enough is enough and pack it in. Fighting the system, fighting the business, and fighting the public apathy is a tiring and expensive proposition. If that day should come, I may not have won the battle, but I want to be able too look back and say I fought the good fight, did what I could, and gave it what I had to give. Until that time comes however, I, like many before, during and after, will happily, if foolishly, done our mantle of red and white and take the field to face whatever befalls us.

Explore, inquire and enjoy.

Write for GWN. Take a look around the site and if it looks like something you would like to be involved in drop me a line! CD reviews, artist features, some cool aspect of the music business, all are welcome. We can't pay you, but by line and/or photo credit are always given!
